| Description: | Metallosphaera sedula (strain ATCC 51363 / DSM 5348) is a thermophilic aerobic archaeon phylogenetically associated with the kingdom Crenarchaeota. Metallosphaera sedula (strain ATCC 51363 / DSM 5348) was isolated from a thermal pond in the Pisciarelli Solfatara in Italy. This organism is able to leach metals from sulfidic ores making it a potential bioleaching agent. The rate of oxidation of iron pyrite for this organism is increased under conditions of thermal and chemical stress. The genome sequence will provide information on the production and regulation of enzymes involved in the biooxidation of metals. |
