| Description: |
Acidithiobacillus ferrooxidans (strain ATCC 53993), formerly Leptospirillum ferrooxidans, is an acidophilic iron-oxidizing bacterium that is able to grow at a pH range of 1.3 to 4.0. This organism is often identified in acid mine drainage and as a member of microbial consortia involved in bioleaching. Bioleaching is an increasingly important method of recovering important metals, such as copper, nickel, and uranium, from low-grade ore. A. ferrooxidans has been identified as the dominant microorganism in percolation and continuous flow mineral leaching bioreactors. It is derived from the type strain DSM 2705. The genome sequence of this organism will provide information on the production and regulation of proteins involved in iron-oxidation and will be used for comparative analysis with other iron-oxidizing bacteria. |
